European Council President Herman
Van Rompuy’s proposals for the 2014-2020 EU budget could see the UK’s rebate cut
by €1bn a year, according to UK officials. The Van Rompuy draft says all 27 EU
countries should have to finance the rebate, including Britain itself, and there
would be no compensation for British money spent on rural development, which
effectively means a cut of almost 28%.
Open Europe’s Vincenzo Scarpetta is quoted by the Telegraph as saying, “Although Van Rompuy’s proposal represents a cut and an improvement compared to the commission proposal, a cut to the UK rebate has been snuck in, meaning that the UK's net contribution to the EU budget would go up disproportionally.” He added, “A potential UK veto is still hanging in the air.” (EU Observer)
