The cost of retail crime rose by a sixth in a year to
£1.6BILLION — enough to create 130,000 store jobs.
Yet falling confidence in the police has meant fewer shops reporting thefts, according to the British Retail Consortium survey.
Nearly one in 20 outlets faced the threat of violence from raiders in 2012. The average bill for each robbery trebled to £3,005. Meanwhile, the average value of goods taken by shoplifters rocketed 28 per cent to £109.
The other big crime against retailers is customer fraud — such as returning goods not bought in the store, and using fake notes or other people’s cards.
BRC boss Helen Dickinson said: “Systematic targeting of higher value goods by organised criminals is pushing up the cost of retail crime.
“Retailers spend more than ever on protecting their customers, staff and stock. They deserve the support of law enforcers and politicians.”
