'Critical Thinking' - You MUST Be Joking!

It is frequently argued by those trying to defend modern education that old-style education was 'memory based' and shunned 'critical thinking'.
Having taught RS for a generation - I wonder why I need to spoonfeed more and more as each year goes by.
As a Spanish teacher by trade - I came into teaching just at the point where knowledge was being 'junked' in favour of 'skills'.

Pastors Do NOT Work Hard Enough!

Thom S Rainer.
An experiment I tried several years ago, though, might prove instructive. When I was a pastor in St. Petersburg, Florida, I gave a survey to the twelve deacons in the church (I jokingly said we had eleven good deacons and one Judas!). I listed several congregational responsibilities and asked them to share the minimum amount of time I should average in each area each week. I listed about twenty areas; but they were free to add other responsibilities to the blank lines.
I'm not sure exactly what I was anticipating. I just know that I was shocked when I tallied the results. In order to meet those twelve deacons minimum expectations I had to fulfill the following responsibilities each week:

  • Prayer at the church: 14 hours
  • Sermon preparation: 18 hours
  • Outreach and evangelism: 10 hours
  • Counseling: 10 hours
  • Hospital and home visits: 15 hours
  • Administrative functions: 18 hours
  • Community involvement: 5 hours
  • Denominational involvement: 5 hours
  • Church meetings: 5 hours
  • Worship services/preaching: 4 hours
  • Other: 10 hours
Total: 114 hours/week. Read more at: http://www.christianpost.com/news/how-many-hours-must-a-pastor-work-to-satisfy-the-congregation-100959/#hFISqZ0eJC3QPz3L.99

Pipe Dreams?

A recent article in the Telegraph tries in vain to explain how the tory party can win back votes in the North.
It should have been entitled 'Pipe Dreams' - or something of the sort.
Those votes are going in a Ukip direction.
BUT both the major parties - oh, and the Lib Dems - are haemorrhaging votes to Ukip in significant amounts.

Dallas Willard RIP.

Dallas Willard was a philosopher who had a great influence on American evangelicalism. He was conscious that Christianity was under attack in parts of the university world, and much of his writing was an implicit response to that. He constantly emphasised that there was such a thing as moral and spiritual knowledge. This was a central theme in Knowing Christ Today (2009), subtitled “Why we can trust spiritual knowledge”. Here he lamented that Christianity had lost its reputation for promoting a basic body of knowledge that was testable and available to anyone who wanted to know about it. Elsewhere, he wrote that the mind becomes dysfunctional when the “light” of God is put out in the heart and soul. The widespread loss of faith had resulted in an ethical vacuum, he thought.

Vapour Trail Clue To Universal Origins.

A lesser known theory as to the origins of the universe holds that everything came about from the vapour trail of a huge aircraft.
This is known as The Big Boeing Theory.
There are some who will argue against this by questioning how this aircraft could possibly exist before everything else began.
This is just plain silly. After all, the best known of all hypotheses is The Big Bang Theory. (Er - what pre-existing material  is supposed to have exploded BTW?)
Thus, we may rest comfortable in the knowledge that the logic in this view is no less developed than that of  the multi-talented cosmologists.

New National Insurance Numbers - A Giant Clue!

New national insurance numbers have been gifted willy-nilly to foreigners at an annual rate of between 600,000 and 700,000 for the past three years, far higher than the official rate of immigration.
The more suspicious amongst us might wonder about the reasons for such a discrepancy! - Incidentally, that comes to TWO MILLION in just three years of Tory Government!

Hedley Verity: Great Bowler And War Hero Who Died 70 Years Ago Tomorrow.

England cricketer Hedley Verity, accustomed to the manicured turf and genteel surroundings of Headingley and Lord's, was now leading his troops against the German army in Sicily.
Shells were exploding overhead, illuminating the night sky. Artillery fire rained in from all angles, making the dusty ground fizz and spit venomously. And the burning trees and crops surrounding Verity's battalion made them feel both trapped and exposed.
Captain Verity, 38 years old and suffering from the debilitating effects of dysentery remained at the front of his men. He ordered one of his platoons to a distant farmhouse and told the other to give them cover.
Almost as soon as he uttered the words, Verity was hit in the chest by a piece of shrapnel and dumped to the ground in agony. Yet he still implored his men to "keep going".
Verity's Ashes.
Hedley Verity batting
  • 1932-33: The infamous 'Bodyline'  series in Australia, won 4-1 by England under the captaincy of the controversial Douglas Jardine.
  • 1934: Australia gain revenge by winning series 2-1. Second Test at Lord's becomes known as 'Verity's Match' though, after he takes 15 wickets.
  • 1936-7: Australia retain Ashes with 3-2 win. Don Bradman scores 270 in third Test in Melbourne, which some have described as the greatest-ever innings.
  • 1938: Series finishes 1-1, so Australia again retain Ashes. Final Test is remarkable, with Len Hutton scoring 364 as England score 903 for 7 declared to square series.
Verity died on 31 July 1943, almost exactly 70 years ago, and was the most illustrious of the five England Test cricketers to be killed in action.
The proud Yorkshireman is regarded as one of the most effective slow left-arm bowlers in the history of English cricket, having taken an astonishing 1,956 first-class wickets at an average of just 14.90, inspiring Yorkshire to seven County Championships during the 1930s. The highlight of his domestic career was 10 for 10 against Nottinghamshire in a championship match in 1932, which is still a record today.
Verity played in four Ashes series, including the infamous 'Bodyline' tour of Australia in 1932-33,  which England won 4-1. The second Test of the 1934 series has actually become known as 'Verity's match', after he took 15 for 104, including 14 wickets in a day and the scalp of the great Don Bradman in each innings. Before Graeme Swann achieved the feat against Australia on Friday, he was the last England spinner to take five wickets in an Ashes Test at Lord's.
His Test record is 144 wickets in 40 Test matches at an average of 24.37 and he took Bradman's wicket more times than any other Test bowler - eight times in 17 Tests. The legendary Australian actually wrote the foreword to Alan Hill's excellent biography 'Hedley Verity: Portrait of a Cricketer',  which was published in 1986 and remains the definitive tome on the bowler.
Bradman writes: "We were great rivals and I grew to respect him both as a gentleman and a player. His ideal physique and lovely economical lazy run-up were co-ordinated to put him in a perfect delivery position, with a superb command of length and direction.
"But more than his cricketing skill was his sportsmanship and manly bearing under all circumstances. I never once heard him complain or offer a criticism.
"His whole career exemplified all that was best about cricket and I deem it an honour and privilege to have been on stage with him in those golden days of the 1930s."
Former Yorkshire and England captain Brian Close  told me Verity has long been revered at Headingley, the ground he was born within the shadow of where there is a plaque bearing his name next to the Hutton gates.
Verity's last first-class match was against Sussex at Hove in September 1939, when he took seven wickets for nine runs to bowl Sussex out for 33 in their second innings. After that, the County Championship was postponed because of the war, although Yorkshire had already done enough to claim their seventh title of the 1930s.
Verity joined the British Army soon afterwards and was posted to the first battalion of The Green Howards,  along with fellow Yorkshire players Len Hutton,  Herbert Sutcliffe,  Maurice Leyland  and Arthur Wood.

The Left - Why Do So Many Fail To Understand What Is Rightwing? - Embarrassment?

The point comes up so often that I feel that I must cover some old ground once again.
There are few of us to the right of Neil Kinnock or Obama who haven't, on occasion, been called 'fascist' by some earnest, vehemently intolerant, ill-informed leftie.
But do they even know who is truly rightwing and who not? - Hardly.
Hitler, Franco & Mussolini - which one is the odd one out?
Of course, it is Franco who was an ultra conservative and thus may be reasonably referred to as 'rightwing'.

36 years on the run he was only returned to prison 12 years ago - and he has been out for the last four.
My contempt for this foul individual knows few bounds - but as a Christian I shall still pray earnestly for his redemption. We have to try to love those who are tainted with evil. This of course, does not mean that I think that he should have wriggled out of his earthly punishmnent.

American Pastor Imprisoned in I ran Receives Long-Awaited Medical Care for Injuries From Beatings.
Abedini 4An American pastor who is imprisoned in his homeland of Iran for planting house churches in the country over a decade ago has finally received medical treatment after being denied care for many months.
As previously reported, 32-year-old Abedini, who resides in Idaho with his wife Naghmeh and their two children, has been incarcerated in Iran’s notorious Evin Prison since last September for allegedly threatening the national security of Iran by planting house churches, and for attempting to turn youth in the nation away from Islam and toward Christianity. He had traveled to Iran to build an orphanage last fall, and was about to return to the states when he was taken into custody.
According to reports, he has been beaten on numerous occasions by prison guards, but has been denied treatment because of his Christian faith. Christian News Network.

Earthquakes may contribute to global warming by releasing greenhouse gas from the ocean floor, a study suggests.
Scientists uncovered evidence that a large earthquake in 1945 released more than seven million cubic metres of methane into the North Arabian Sea.

2) Why is he so opposed to public opinion?

Clegg Screws The Taxpayer.

The official in charge of Chevening (pictured right), the palatial Kent mansion used by the Deputy Prime Minister, protested to the Cabinet after Nick Clegg (pictured left with wife Miriam) objected to paying for lavish entertaining at private functions. After a bitter dispute with Mr Clegg, taxpayers were forced to meet part of the bill, with the Liberal Democrat leader reluctantly paying the lion's share. Chevening, near Sevenoaks, was built in the 17th Century and has 115 rooms. Mr Clegg shares it with Foreign Secretary William Hague. Mail.

Ford Transit Scandal: NOW Tell Me That The EU Is On Our Side!

The closure of the Ford transit factory in Southampton has been branded as "scandalous" by UKIP Leader Nigel Farage, with production moving from Swaythling to Turkey thanks to the European Investment Fund.  This is purely the result of the European Investment Bank offering a €190 million loan for Ford’s relocation last December.  The EIB is the bank of the European Union.
"Over 500 British workers are set to lose their jobs thanks to this closure, it is outrageous," said Farage.  "Yet again the EU is putting British people out of work and transferring jobs to foreigners. We must be crazy and the fact that the government is allowing this is a scandal.  Only UKIP stands up for British workers. We don't believe they are lazy and useless - we believe that they deserve a government that backs and believes in them."

From this rather substantial base - Nebraska Man was created:
I had been somewhat tempted to name this 'The Big Fang Theory.'

Docetism - Ever Wondered Why It Was Heretical?

Docetism was an error with several variations concerning the nature of Christ.  Generally, it taught that Jesus only appeared to have a body, that he was not really incarnate, (Greek, "dokeo" = "to seem").  This error developed out of the dualistic philosophy which viewed matter as inherently evil,  that God could not be associated with matter, and that God, being perfect and infinite, could not suffer.  Therefore, God as the word, could not have become flesh per John 1:1,14, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God...And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us.. "  This denial of a true incarnation meant that Jesus did not truly suffer on the cross and that He did not rise from the dead. By Matt Slick
This heresy may not actually be alive and well but sadly, it still rears its ugly head on occasion.

A double killer on day release is accused of murdering Graham Buck, 66, in Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire, on July 13.
Without saying anything prejudicial to the legal process in this matter, I shall simply note that if found guilty - this will not become a cause célèbre for the raving liberal left.
This will simply be an atrocity which can be put to one side with gaze averted. THEY ARE ENTIRELY TO BLAME for deaths of this type which they incorrectly claim as rarities. Had the perpetrator of such a previous crime - in the circumstances described, been hanged - such a situation could not possibly arise.
They ignore the scores of deaths of this type; they ignore the fact that loss of deterrent led to huge increases in murder rates and cost many thousands of innocent lives when our deterrent was removed. (This Blog has outlined the details of these facts many times over.) They have done all in their power to conceal the facts - but I have seen the Home Office data stats which were released to me when a JP.
The left instead concentrate on the desperate quest for 'an executed martyr' in the UK. Even if Hanratty and Evans had been innocent as they wrongly claim - how could  a mere TWO justify permitting so many deaths of innocent citizens?
