Mercy.

This, of course, is an enjoinder to all individual Christians. Different criteria apply when considering the duties of society towards wrongdoers. God has given a clear template, moreover, Jesus said that He 'had not come to change the Law'.
That is not to say that society should never show mercy - but you are looking more at exceptional rather than common circumstance.
