Sixteen year-olds who are eligible for free school meals remain far less likely to earn good GCSEs than less disadvantaged peers and make slower progress through secondary school, the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) said.

Grammar schooling went a long way towards evening out the inequalities until our leftist friends decided that it was 'elitist'. Interesting that this 'elitism' took so many of the lower classes and raised them in ways that comprehensive schools never could. Both Mrs Blogger and I as well as most of our friends from childhood fell into this category.

The main reason for this was that the grammar schools set standards really high. Comprehensives have only ever pretended to.
