St Paul’s Cathedral has upset the family of Sir Winston Churchill after they branded the wartime leader as an “unashamed imperialist” and “white supremacist.”
The insulting description is understood to have remained on the cathedral’s website for more than a year, although Sir Winston’s state funeral was held there in 1965.
In an article on the site about the state funeral, the website referred to his role in “fending off the threat of invasion and enabling a fightback against the Nazi occupation of Europe.”
But the site added: “He is also a figure of controversy, as he was an unashamed imperialist and white supremacist.”
Sir Winston’s grandson Nicholas Soames told the Mail on Sunday that his family felt that the remarks were “deeply offensive, thoughtless, stupid and ignorant.” DT.
