SIR – I am the part-owner of a small shop in a nearby town. It has been occupied by a well-respected and extremely competent professional for the past 25 years. Earlier this year he approached me for an extension to his tenancy, which will expire next March, to which I and my co-owner were happy to agree.
Last week he contacted me to say that he had decided not to take an extended tenancy. His main reasons were the substantial increase in employers’ National Insurance contributions, and the hike in the minimum wage, which, he said, his business quite simply could not afford. This means two good part-time jobs have been lost that will not be replaced, thanks to the mindless attack on employers by Rachel Reeves.
I have no doubt at all that this scenario will be repeated thousands of times in towns and villages up and down the country, demonstrating only too well the damage caused by the Chancellor’s tax raid. Why on earth did the country vote into power a party that experience has shown cannot be trusted?
