Scientology.
'Debbie Cook's email, which was sent to 12,000 fellow Scientologists shortly after midnight on New Year's Day, alleges that Mr Miscavige has adopted a dictatorial leadership style which is at odds with the doctrines laid down by the church's founder, the science fiction author, L Ron Hubbard.'

Assisted Suicide.
The most recent attempts to look at 'care for the dying', which seemingly could allow for the possibility of assisted suicides, needs to be given much scrutiny.
Of all issues covered on this Blog - this really is the one where my attitudes are found at their most ambivalent.
I have taught 'the euthanasia dilemma' to countless school pupils over years and, having considered both sides of the argument, I really must say that I am a dyed-in-the-wool fence-sitter.
Sorry if this disappoints some readers who come on here because I don't generally shillyshally in my views - but that's just the way it is.

Church Attendance.
In the U.K., 76.8 percent are said to be religious according to sources, with Christianity being the dominant faith.
In 2007, a Tearfund survey found that 10 percent of religious individuals attend church on a weekly basis- although this figure significantly increased around Christmas.' (Christian Post.)
I may have a simple answer to what seems a bit of a paradox.
Might it not be that churches which are 'alive' are prospering - whilst those which are not, are not?

The EU Our Friends? - I Don't Think So!

French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel were yesterday edging towards a deal for a swingeing EU-wide financial transaction tax, despite fierce opposition from Britain. Sources in the French government said the two will discuss “rapid implementation” of the levy next Monday. Jean Leonetti, French minister for Europe, claimed it will be in force “by the end of the year”.The latest plotting triggered fury at Westminster amid fears the levy could penalise the City of London and lead to up to 500,000 job cuts in the UK.
David Wright Is Off The Mark.
In his letter to the Yorkshire Post yesterday, David Wright rightly lambasts the present honours system but adds:
'Admittedly, there is the occasional exception of a genuine do-gooder who quite rightly gets recognition.'
NOOOOOO! The last thing we must ever do is to reward 'do-gooders'!
Reward the meddlers and the problem causers? Reward the know-it-alls and the self-righteous? Reward the soppy liberals and the terminally well-meaning? Good grief NO!
On the other hand - people who actually 'do good' should of course, be rewarded.
Let us always make the essential distinction. Maybe Mr Wright had simply not recognised that 'do-gooder' is almost exclusively a pejorative term!

Stephen Lawrence Convictions.
I am positively crowing with delight at the convictions of two of the killers of Stephen Lawrence after a 15 year wait.
The only down sides in all of this are firstly, the lack of true punishments for these vile evil-doers and secondly, the question as to whether all this effort would have been expended had this not been - for some reason or other - such a cause célèbre.
Labour HATES Education!
'Just one in five pupils were entered for GCSE exams in traditional academic subjects during Labour’s last year in Government, new figures have revealed today.
In some areas, just three per cent of children were given the chance to study the core academic subjects of English, maths, two sciences, a language or history or geography.
The official figures reveal the extent to which hundreds of thousands of children were encouraged to drop academic subjects in favour of so-called softer options.
They show that in 13 years under Labour, the number of pupils entering these academic core exams fell dramatically from 50 per cent in 1997 to 22per cent in 2010.

Yorks Post Letters Expose Cant.

CAROLINE Thomson, the BBC’s chief operating officer, said at a recent conference that the use of expletives was acceptable in the name of comedy and one of its objects was to cause offence and make viewers flinch.
This being the case why did the BBC feel the need to apologise profusely for the use of the word “fairies” or “coloured” when referring to footballers?
Words we all must have used at times without causing distress to anyone.
Surely a case of double standards or have I missed something?

IT is inevitable that the meanings of words change over time but there is something wrong when Alan Hansen has to apologise for describing ethnic minorities as “coloured”.
Today, I am not allowed to say that my wife and I have a beautiful coloured niece; I have to say that she is black, which she is not. And to say that Halle Berry is black, when she is a delicious shade of café au lait, is equally absurd.
So how is it that millions of African Americans choose to belong to the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People? I smell hypocrisy.
