Persecution In Vietnam.

Vietnam FlagPlease pray for our family in Vietnam as new laws on religion threaten to limit their freedoms.
Vietnam’s Law on Belief and Religion, which came into force on January 1, has alarmed Christians because it insists religious groups must be registered and approved by the Government. They also believe that the law’s vague wording could be exploited to limit church activities.
Please pray that Christians in Vietnam will know God’s peace and presence.
Despite some improvement in religious freedoms in Vietnam in recent years, some Christians continue to face intense pressure, especially those who speak out against corruption and rights abuses.
Christian lawyer Nguyen Van Dai and Pastor Nguyen Trung Ton are both still in custody in Hanoi since their arrests in December 2015 and July 2017 respectively – because they have called for greater religious freedom. They have been barred from meeting their lawyers.
Last month, Christian activist Maria Tran Thị Nga, a mother of two young children from Ha Nam province, was found guilty of ‘propaganda against the state’ and sentenced to nine years in prison and five years under house arrest. Her harsh sentence and irregularities relating to her trial have prompted an international outcry.
Christian bloggers have also been targeted: last week, a court in Nghe An province upheld a five-year prison sentence against Nguyen Van Oai for his pro-democracy campaigns.
  • Thank God for the way that relations between the Government in Hanoi and religious groups have improved slightly in recent years. Pray that the new law will not threaten this progress.
  • Pray that God will use His people who have spoken out about religious rights and about Him to draw many in Vietnam into a close personal relationship with Him.
  • As part of our #PRAY50 campaign (see below), please pray that God will speak to the hearts of those who persecute our Christian family in Vietnam – and reveal His great love for them.

Electro-Pulse Fishing.

Calais port blockade shows “the anger and depth of feeling” over continued use of electro-pulse fishing.

Published Jan 25, 2018
UKIP fisheries spokesman slams Labour for voting to hold enquiry into granting of electro-pulse licences in private.
A blockade at the French port of Calais over the use of electro-pulse fishing, “shows the anger and depth of feeling in fishing communities across Europe,” according to UKIP fisheries spokesman, Mike Hookem MEP.
Mr Hookem, who works with fishing communities across the British Isles spoke out after French fishers blocked the busy channel link in protest at the continued use of elector-pulse fishing. Electro-pulse has been branded “grotesque” after scientist found it broke the back of cod, and fishermen said it left areas of the seabed “like a desert.”
Electro-pulse fishing is set to be outlawed in Europe following a vote in Strasbourg last week but will continue in the North Sea while negotiations with the European Commission take place.
Speaking from Brussels, Mr Hookem said, “while I don’t condone this type of protest which hits hard working hauliers and travellers alike; the experimental use of electro-pulse fishing has become an increasing contentious issue in fishing communities across Europe.
“While the Dutch companies who employ this method have been getting rich, traditional small-scale fishers have seen vast reductions in their catches and a great deal of ecological damage.
“Fishing communities were further outraged when they discovered the European Commission had ignored its own scientific advisors in granting ‘experimental’ licences for electro-pulse fishing.”
“While a few MEPs on the PECH committee, including myself have called for an investigation into how the European Commission could ignore scientific evidence in such a way, others have been fighting against such a move.
“In fact, only this week, S&D, the Parliamentary grouping the British Labour Party belong to, voted to hold any discussions regarding an investigation behind closed doors.
“Making the process of investigation private only adds weight to accusations that the European Parliament is in no way open and transparent. Fishers across Europe want - and in my opinion have a right - to know why their livelihoods have been damaged, when scientists have expressed concerns over a decade ago.
“The fact is, electro-pulse fishing should be banned from all waters with immediate effect and fishers should be given the answers they demand.
“However, it comes as no shock that Labour continue to chart an anti-fishing course, especially after they voted last week to retain the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) post-Brexit.

Jonathan Hits The Bullseye!

A few comments/questions on the article by a top police officer proposing that drivers should stop 'whingeing' and expect fines and points for being just 1mph over the limit:
1. Is technology - both on cars and every form of speed measuring device - so accurate that you can say with 100% confidence that a speed camera reading of 71 on a motorway won't:
a) have a normal car speedometer showing 70 and being 1mph out, and/or
b) A 1mph error on the measuring device?
2. Does he take a similar zero-tolerance approach to offences of actual dishonesty (i.e. non-strict liability offences for which the mens rea as well as the actus reus must be proven) like shoplifting?
3. He says speed limits were introduced for a reason. In which decade were these speed limits set, and what level of safety (car braking systems, EBS, airbags, etc.) were common at the time they were set?
4. Similarly, does he recognise that other countries with higher speed limits often have similar road safety records to ours?
5. Does he accept that signage is often inadequate in real driving conditions, and that a huge increase in the number of signs would be required to ensure that all reasonable drivers are always aware of the precise speed limit?
6. Has he ever driven through an average speed check area with a reduced speed limit late at night? Does he understand the constant need to check speedometer every couple of seconds to maintain an unnaturally low speed for the conditions leads to some drivers being distracted from the road?
7. How often is excess speed, above the speed limit but close to it, actually the sole cause of road traffic accidents? (Statistics which include driving too fast for snowy conditions, below the speed limit, or drunk drivers who also happen to be speeding, present an intentionally distorted picture to drivers - and people driving at 130mph in a 70mph zone are plainly far more likely to cause accidents than those driving at 73 say)
8. Why is a top traffic police officer focusing on only this tiny minority (if indeed it exists at all) of accidents rather than the far larger problems of drink-driving, drug-driving, drivers without a licence, uninsured drivers, drivers of dangerously unsafe vehicles, drivers of stolen vehicles, and so on? Is it simply that someone driving at 71mph on a motorway is easier to catch and will make his statistics look better?
9. Is he for real?
Britain's road policing chief said motorists should be fined even if they are 1mph over the speed limit and drivers are not afraid enough of getting caught because of speeding awareness courses.

Senior Ofsted official backs headteacher over hijab ban for under eights.

Amanda Spielman says religion is being used to ‘actively pervert’ education and school leaders should not fear causing offence when setting policies.
Ofsted’s chief inspector has warned of the danger posed by people who use religion to “actively pervert” education as she made an unusual intervention in a dispute between parents and the headteacher of a primary school over banning the youngest Muslim girls from wearing the hijab.
In a speech to a Church of England schools conference on Thursday, Amanda Spielman is to publicly support the head, Neena Lall, who imposed the ban last month in the face of opposition from parents and community leaders at the predominantly Muslim state school in east London. Guardian.

Farewell, Hannah.

Yorkshire farmer and TV star Hannah Hauxwell dies at 91.

A HARDY female farmer who found fame in TV documentaries chronicling her tough life has died aged 91. Hannah Hauxwell inherited her parents’ farm, Low Birk Hatt near the North Pennine village of Baldersdale, County Durham, when she was 34.

By MARK LISTER, Express.

REX / SHUTTERSTOCK / ITVShe had no electricity or running water and tended her small herd of cattle in ragged clothing even when temperatures fell below freezing.
Yorkshire Television filmed a documentary about her in 1972 called Too Long A Winter, following her struggle to survive.
She was living on £240 a year at a time when the average salary was £2,000. When the documentary aired, the TV company’s phone line was jammed for three days with viewers wanting to find out more and to help her.
A local factory raised money to fund running electricity to Low Birk Hatt Farm and she continued to receive thousands of letters and donations from well-wishers around the world.
Almost two decades later the same TV crew returned to her farm. The second documentary, A Winter Too Many, showed that she had a little more money, which she invested in a few more cows. The crew followed her to London where she was guest of honour at the Women Of The Year gala.

A bomb hidden in an ambulance has killed at least 95 people and injured more than 150 in the heavily fortified heart of the Afghan capital, Kabul, in the latest in a string of high-profile attacks.
The suicide bomber struck at a police checkpoint where the streets were crowded with people queueing to visit nearby offices and embassies, and vendors serving them. Witnesses said bodies were strewn across the pavement.
“It’s a massacre,” said Dejan Panic, a coordinator for the nearby emergency hospital, which was nearly overwhelmed by the flood of victims. Dozens were laid out on mattresses in the courtyard to wait for treatment from medics with the Italian charity, which was still tending to patients from previous attacks.
The bombing was the deadliest in Kabul for nearly eight months, a warning that even though the US has stepped up operations against insurgents, they still have the capacity to carry out attacks in government strongholds.
This week alone Isis shut down a charity that serves millions of Afghans by targeting its headquarters, and a Taliban attack on a high-profile hotel killed 22 people and crippled an airline providing vital transport links over militant-controlled territory. Guardian.

The mosquitos have been infected with the bacteria in labs - the plan aims for males to mate with females carrying the deadly diseases such as Zika, dengue and yellow fever.
The sterilising Wolbachia will cause eggs from the females to die before they are able to hatch.
The first round of males will be released in Miami, USA, this week.

UK Government Is Bonkers.

WARRENDER: Government plans to scrap MoT tests on 40 year old cars

UKIP call for Last Minute rethink on Scrapping the MoT safety test on 40 year old cars. Small business will see £200 Million lost, to say nothing of the safety aspect.
Against expert advice The Government is determined to press ahead with this dangerous policy.
40 year old cars capable of speeds up to 150mph and as we all know, susceptible to structural rust, will be allowed on our roads with no MoT test. Why is this cash strapped Government forsaking a revenue source and  putting people’s lives at risk? What is behind it?
