In days gone by, fear of consequences which were proportionate to the crimes committed kept many from drifting too far off the straight and narrow.
For perhaps the majority, one taste of the rough edge of the Law was all that was needed.
Then came the 'rehabilitation is more important than punishment' jockeys.

It is all based on the simplistic, false premise - that, deep down, all criminals wish to be worthy citizens.
This is patently nothing more than pure tosh!
Rehabilitation MUST be attempted but AFTER punishment NOT instead!
