Naturally, it is not possible to be fair to the man himself as his longstanding duplicity simply cannot allow for this.
I shall however be fair where I can and shall point out that the huge number of leftist attacks on him are as wicked as they are unfair - when considering what IDS is doing to rationalise the welfare state.

Leftwingers love to give the impression that this is some malevolent attack on the poor by toffs. In this they are wrong and in most cases, probably intelligent enough not to believe their own propaganda.
The poor in society are made poor for so long as they remain in that vicious circle which has them - and their descendants - sitting comfortably; dependent on the state. They atrophy and see parasitism as the norm. They lose all sense of personal pride.
The state must return to what Beveridge & co envisaged back in the 40s - a giant safety net and nothing more!
Moreover, lefties pretend that there is an easy way out of the current economic mess which does not include austerity measures.
