Margaret Hilda - RIP.

If  proof were ever needed as to why Margaret Hilda Thatcher was such a special lady, it is the deep vilification she suffered at the hands of the left for whom she was an object of utter scorn, vitrepuse, bile and general foulness.
This should be viewed simply as a badge of honour.
She was the last of the great conviction politicians and will be remembered kindly by history on that score alone. Perhaps not since Attlee have we seen any other PM motivated purely by the best needs of the nation rather than for self interest, party selfishness and delusions of adequacy. She was of course, a Christian.

This is not to say that she couldn't make mistakes - because she was fully human and her failings could be noteworthy. One of her greatest problems, of course, was that she was surrounded by political midgets.
Indeed, it may well be the case that she only looked as good as she did because of the glaring inadequacies of virtually all other politicians of her day.
What I admired in The Iron Lady was that she could admit it when she was proved to be wrong.
She went from a 'sold out europhile' to a state of dismay when she finally saw what the EU was all about - and it was at that very point she was considered 'dangerous' by the Brussels-loving sellout-merchants in her own party and out came the knives to plant firmly into her back.
Her five most magnificent achievements were clearly when: she refused to give in to Galtieri's bullying; in delaying the inexorable march of the liberal left by a decade; in working so brilliantly with Ronald Reagan to end the Soviet menace and bring the USSR back into civilisation through the good offices of Gorbachev; in giving working people aspirations and ambitions; in democratising the trade unions and facing down the odious Scargill.
Who else has achieved as much since Churchill supervised the ending of the Nazi threat?
