Voltaire Misunderstood.

'If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent Him.Voltaire.
Read this with care and you will note that its starting point seems to be that God does exist and NOT the opposite. (It's all in the 'if'.) Incidentally, I studied this man at university. Suggesting that he was a definite atheist is not easy to justify. Firstly, you have to filter out his scorn for the Roman Church and secondly, always remember that he was an author seeking to have an explosive effect on his readers. (He was actually a deist.)
