Richie Benaud - RIP.

As someone who has done no little broadcasting myself, although only where football is concerned, I have always looked enviously at the greatest commentator of them all (albeit in cricket) and tell it not in Gath - but an Aussie to boot. Richie Benaud was the great spin bowler of my childhood era, a very decent batsman and a mighty Aussie cricket captain. But, in his typically understated way, he was surely the best cricket commentator of all time - and this was in a field where mighty commentators have long abounded. He died at 84 after a fight with skin cancer - his common sense and incisive thinking will be greatly missed. Perversely perhaps, I shall look forward to the many tribute programmes which will fill our TV screens in the coming weeks.
