Global trade with EU
SIR
– I am astonished by the content of the letter
from Philip Hammond, the Foreign Secretary. He seems to be under the
impression that, without the accompanying commitment to freedom of movement of
people, countries such as the United States, China, Brazil and India only have
access to the EU single market in goods. This is totally false, as all of these
countries also trade services within the single market.
Under
the heading “Helping your business in the EU”, the United States Mission to the
EU website clearly states: “Every year, the US Commercial Service helps
thousands of companies export goods and services worth billions of dollars.”
It
goes some way to explaining our massive trade deficit with the EU, if government
ministers are not aware of the rules and would rather take the advice of Angela
Merkel.
