SIR
– Philip Hammond, the Chancellor, needs to be more careful in his utterances
about Brexit, and should now cross the Rubicon to accepting the referendum
result.
Nothing
feeds disquiet more than negative statements. Rocky roads lie ahead, but harping
on about them will damage Theresa May’s efforts.
The
delicate economic situation does not in any way give “a senior Treasury figure”
the right to go bleating about the difficulties ahead.
There
were warnings before and after the referendum that civil servants in the
Treasury could make life difficult. Their respective ministers should put them
in their place and tell them to get on with achieving the best possible outcome
for Britain. If they feel unable to do so, they should be moved to other –
possibly less important – positions.
