During the years when Hitler was building up Nazi
Germany's Luftwaffe - the UK was 'reaping the peace dividend'. We had stopped
keeping forces which were even barely fit for purpose.
Hitler's hosts of Messerschmitts could easily reach
350 mph whilst we possessed 24 squadrons of biplanes hardly able to reach 220 -
and with grossly inferior fire power.
Had it not been for 5 squadrons of Sidney Camm's
brilliant Hurricanes - we would have not been able to lay claim to having a
functional airforce at all!
There is no such animal as 'a peace dividend' without
grave risk to the nation. Why has this lesson had to be learned and relearned
repeatedly since the time of the Napoleonic Wars?
Had it not been for mighty pressure from the Winston
Churchills of this world - The Battle of Britain would have been lost and with
it the whole of World War Two!
It is customarily the left who try to inveigle voters
into adopting these insane thought processes - but the ever-limp Tories are not
all that far behind them!
It is not the first time that this Blog has pointed out the possibility that Chamberlain knew exactly what he was doing in Munich.
