Sir Geoffrey was one of England's greatest batsmen. I do not approve of the current honours system but, surely, within its rather bizarre parameters, he deserved a knighthood.
The problem has been that Geoff was accused of domestic assault by his girlfriend. This was in France.
I studied the case very carefully at the time even if the finer details currently elude me.
I was wholly convinced that in a 'he said - she said' trial, he could not have been convicted in a British court.
There were other factors which made the conviction very dubious indeed.
To Theresa I can say "Congratulations for finally getting one decision right."
