Fighting FGM.

Florence Lomariwo’s lifelong crusade against female genital mutilation (FGM) started with her own narrow escape. When she turned nine, Florence’s caregivers planned her FGM ceremony in preparation for her upcoming wedding.

“I did not want to be married early because it would shatter all my dreams,” Florence says. “I ran away from home, living with well-wishers and teachers who supported my desire to complete my education and make something of myself.”

Florence’s determination paid off. After finishing secondary school, she enrolled in a teaching college and later graduated with a degree in education.

This remarkable change-maker now runs a school and rescue centre for girls who have escaped FGM and early marriage. What’s more, she’s the chair of the committee overseeing the local Compassion project.
