La Palma volcano map: Where the Canary Islands eruption happened and areas affected as 5,000 people evacuated.
Lava has been pouring from the Cumbre Vieja volcano, forcing tourists to flee a holiday resort, in the first eruption in the Canary Islands for 50 years
Red-hot lava was spewing from the Cumbre Vieja volcano at about 700 metres per hour, according to the Canary Islands Volcanology Institute. Scientists monitoring the lava measured the temperature at more than 1,000C.
About 20 houses in the village of El Paso were engulfed by the lava, along with sections of some roads. Authorities evacuated people from several coastal towns, including the resort of Puerto Naos – from which 360 tourists were evacuated by boat to Tenerife.
