Interesting piece. One thing that the author fails to mention is that the oil companies have a mind to set up internal organisations that can easily switch across to “renewable” energy, if politicians decide to “ban” fossil fuel exploration. The time lapse from exploring for oil and gas in the geologist’s mind to delivery for consumption can take many years, so there is a lead time from banning exploration to it being felt by the consumer. Nevertheless, there is big money involved in the investment and oil companies always have that in mind. Positioning themselves for renewable energy is because they are energy companies, a point missed by the author. If a time comes when oil and gas are not even produced because of political reasons, my belief is that it will be ExxonMobil, BP, Shell, Chevron, Total etc who will be the main suppliers of renewable energy needs. The author misses that the oil executives are positioning their companies to acquire the renewable energy market. They will just buy it out, if it comes to that. Climate activists, politicians, environmentalists etc who are looking forward to the end of the big oil companies fail to gather that actually they are energy companies. One thing I can say about oil company executives is that while they are many things, they are not stupid.
