Valérie Pécresse, the centre-right candidate in France’s presidential election in April, has sought to counter her populist rivals with pledges to expel planeloads of illegal immigrants from the country and to use troops to fight crime.
Her tack to the right appears designed to pull the rug out from under Marine Le Pen, 53, leader of the hardline National Rally, and Éric Zemmour, 63, the anti-Islam pundit, who are running neck-and-neck with her for a place in the second round of the election.The strategy also aims to wrestle the initiative away from President Macron, 44, the election favourite, after a week dominated by headlines over his promise to “piss off” the unvaccinated.
