Hi, For people in parts of Sudan, churches have been turned into places of war instead of worship. Both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have violated International Humanitarian Law by attacking or using places of worship for military purposes over the course the current conflict. Before the city of El Fasher fell to the RSF in October 2025, the Sudan Episcopal Church was hit six times by RSF shelling. In an attack in September, two people were killed whilst sheltering in the church amid RSF shelling of SAF locations. Five others were injured and seven were missing. This is just one case, but there are many more. Please, will you support people in Sudan and around the world facing violence because of their beliefs? Make my gift The RSF also attacked a mosque near the Abu Souk Camp for internally displaced people in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur State, on 19 September. At least 70 people were killed while they were praying, and an unknown number were injured as the building was reduced to rubble. We must keep speaking out about this brutality until there is justice and freedom. Why?  SIR – Lisa Spivey, the Liberal Democrat leader of Gloucestershire council, argues that reducing 30mph speed limits improves air quality (“Council tax rises to fund 20mph zones”, report, February 25). Yet research has suggested that driving vehicles for longer, in lower gears, is not a way to reduce pollution.

These are ridiculous limits, being imposed on us by an anti-motoring party at great cost.

Church of England Bishops do not understand their flocks and are not doing a very good job, Nigel Farage has claimed. In a blistering tirade at Anglican leadership, the Reform UK leader said senior clergy had a "rather twisted view of what their flock in this country Mr Farage was speaking at a press conference in Dover as his 'shadow home secretary', businessman Zia Yusuf, announced their new program for dealing with immigration. In response to a question about his views of Bishops criticising his previous statements on refugees, the Reform leader said clerics had their "heads in the sand" on the issue. DE.

This is an expanded version of my column in today’s Times (£).

Today’s political polarisation takes many forms. One of the most insidious is a way of thinking, among both left-wingers and right-wingers, that holds there can be no enemies to the left of you or no enemies to the right of you.

It’s what might be called sectarian myopia, the refusal to acknowledge a lurch into dangerous extremism on your own side. It’s causing damage and danger in America and Britain. And in France, it has led to a lynching.

Last week, a 23 year-old reportedly right-wing student, Quentin Deranque, was murdered in the southern French city of Lyon after being kicked in the head by a group of extreme-left activists belonging to a group called the Young Guard. Deranque had volunteered to help protect feminists protesting against mass immigration. Eleven people were arrested and seven have been charged with his murder.

Last year, the French government proscribed this group because it attacked feminists, Jews and political opponents. Like other far-left activists such as Antifa and Black Lives Matter, the Young Guard claims to be “fighting fascism”.

In fact, the unprovoked violence committed by such groups hardly fits the definition of anti-fascism. But most of the mainstream left won’t call them out for such behaviour or take action against them. Indeed, many even support them...

Prayer For Strength.

 

Dear All, This Lent, we continue to pray for strength — especially the courage to stand firm when obedience feels costly.  At ADF International, we see daily how standing for truth and freedom requires resolve, wisdom, and faith.  This week, Paul Coleman, Executive Director for ADF International, leads us in prayer from Joshua 1:9, reminding us that courage flows from God’s presence.   He also talks about how this courage relates to our client, Päivi Räsänen, who continues to be criminally prosecuted for expressing her Christian beliefs on marriage and sexuality in a 2019 tweet.   Despite two unanimous acquittals, Päivi now faces the seventh year of legal proceedings. The landmark case was heard at the Finnish Supreme Court on 30 October 2025, following the State prosecutor’s appeal.  The prosecution is seeking tens of thousands of euros in fines and is demanding that Päivi’s publications be censored. Päivi has previously said: “If my writings are banned, then [many] sermons and interviews and writings [could] be in danger. If I [am] convicted, it really would start a time of persecution among Christians.” Yet, despite intense scrutiny and looming penalties, Päivi remains steadfast in her faith.    A Supreme Court decision in Päivi’s case is expected in the coming months. We prayerfully await this momentous verdict with Päivi – knowing that with you by our side, we can continue defending the right to free speech across Europe and beyond.   Will you help us?
