England could be reasonably proud of their apparently modest
batting display in the first innings against Bangladesh at
Chittagong.
293 all out on a turning wicket was more
than respectable.
Sadly, however, England's spinners were not able to emulate their
Bangladeshi counterparts in the quality of their deliveries.
Even though they achieved plenty of turn from the pitch, the line and particularly length, bowled by all three major spinners was seldom better
than moderate. Only Moeen Ali's devastating initial over just before the lunch
break was worthy of any note.
England have never lost a test match to Bangladesh - but they may
have their work cut out to save this game with the home side on 221 - 5 at stumps on
Day Two.
The only hopeful signs for England are that Bangladesh will have to
bat last on a wicket which is rapidly deteriorating and the new ball is due in
just six overs.
