The great man - surely the best songwriter of all time - has passed away. I must mourn because I certainly do fear for his eternal future.
The multi-talented Canadian, who flirted occasionally with Christianity but preferred to remain some sort of 'spiritual religionist' was truly special as a singer/songwriter.
In his early work, his voice was painful, youthful and cracked.
By middle age, the raspy voice had matured and he became a tolerably good singer. Through both phases, the sheer character of the voice made him well worth listening to - but you could understand those who rejected the younger Cohen.
In old age, his voice matured into a simply magnificent dose of purest, velvet baritone - oft times bass.
The number of truly great songs he wrote must have exceeded 50 or 60 - when better known names rarely produce more than a half dozen as maximum.
