Summary
Increases in the number of sexual offences handled by the police in recent years largely reflect improvements in police recording and more victims being willing to report. The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) has estimated an increase in prevalence over the same period, but this is much smaller than seen in police recorded offences.
