I first became truly aware of what was happening to the Spanish economy more than a decade ago. Back then, I owned a small pied à terre in Eastern Spain and spent several months a year in that nation.
It was evident that Spanish manufacturers were closing down in order to make way for cheap Chinese imports. A big play was made by that small percentage of market traders who could boast that their wares had actually been produced in Spain.
I remember saying to my wife that there was significant evidence that this was happening to a tremendous degree in the UK and that we could expect a time when our manufacturers would either go out of business or simply become importers of Chinese goods.
Examine the source of all the manufactured goods you purchase and I promise that you will be both shocked and horrified by the way our nation has allowed a situation to develop where the Chinese exercise a huge amount of control over companies which were once British.
Too much reliance on any foreign nation is a dangerous practice. It means that you are surrendering control of the internal mechanics of your country to what, in this case, remains an avowed Communist state.
I wish that I could salve my conscience and boycott Chinese-made goods - but that has now become impossible. I have to settle for occasional small victories when I learn that a particular product has been made in the UK - and if the price differential is not too high - I will purchase it.
An easy way of finding out the extent of the problem is on Amazon and Ebay where the country of origin is usually shown in micro print.
Spend an hour or two researching a wide variety of products of your choice. It is indeed a salutary experience!
