SIR – Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister, has said that the pay rises of NHS staff and other public servants will be partly financed by increasing charges on foreigners moving to Britain.
Anecdotal evidence suggests that greater sums might accrue to the NHS if its staff were not averse to charging anyone not entitled to free healthcare, either through the lack of a system to check entitlement or because of their view that everyone should receive a free service.
I contrast this attitude with that found in other countries where, before you see a doctor, the first thing they ask for is a credit card. DT.
