From the outset, the 'slant' against the system was clear. All the positives were presented in the customary 'snide' fashion of the liberal elite's anti-elitist lefties - and alleged negatives were given absurd amounts of force.
I suppose that Attenborough 'slagging them off' in the first few minutes made me realise what we were in for.
Grammar schooling dragged me upwards as it did for all my friends and my wife too. The arguments used against them were utterly spurious.
The consequence of all of this was the arrival of the 'apprehensive' school.
After our membership of the EU, I believe that the abolition of the grammar school is the worst thing to have happened to our nation in the last half century. The damage done is incalculable.
Were there problems? - Yes, a few but nothing that couldn't have been sorted out with relative ease.
Today, we desperately need a system which caters for the actual rather than the leftists' perceived needs of different sorts of children.
It was the hate-filled attitudes towards grammar schools by the left which first showed me as a teenager why I could never embrace socialism.
