Elsevier reports that a Dutch citizens’ initiative has been launched to collect signatures for a "stop to transfers of power to the EU and renegotiation. Followed by a referendum in 2017." The Dutch lower house is obliged to put the subject on the agenda if 40.000 citizens lend support. A few thousand have meanwhile already signed on the website Burgerforum.eu. The initiative follows a letter to NRC Handelsblad by nine prominent Dutch professors and academics who argue that European citizens are irrevocably pushed towards a centralised European state without any possibility to influence fundamental decisions.Elsevier NRC Burgerforum.eu
