This is when a law is made after the fact in order to
punish a prior offence. It was used at Nuremburg to ensure the execution for war
crimes of the leading Nazis.
In the UK, it is well worth considering the aftermath of The Civil
War when the same trick was used by the Puritans to condemn the hapless Charles
The First.
I have reservations about this as a basic principle of Justice but
at least, in these two cases, it did ensure that the guilty parties received
their just deserts.
