There’s just two days to go until our Pakistani sister Asia Bibi finds out if she is to be hanged for ‘blasphemy’ or could be set free.
The Supreme Court hearing is Asia’s last chance in court to escape execution: the High Court rejected her appeal against a death sentence two years ago. If the Supreme Court upholds the death sentence then Asia’s only hope would be a presidential pardon.
Please stand with us in praying that the Supreme Court will have the courage to revoke Asia’s sentence – and stand up to extremists demanding her death.
The Punjab farm labourer has spent the past seven years in jail, separated from her children and husband. Asia was accused of blasphemy in 2009.
Since then she has been attacked, abused and sent death threats. A Muslim cleric has offered a large reward for anyone who kills her, and her family have had to go into hiding.
There is widespread concern that if her death sentence is revoked, extremists will riot. Tensions ran high in February when extremist Mumtaz Qadri was executed for murdering Punjab governor Salman Taseer over the governor’s support of blasphemy law reform. Taseer also had called for Asia to be pardoned.
- Please ask God to be with Asia and her family as they wait on Him to deliver her. Pray that she will be released and enabled to start a new life in peace and safety.
- Pray that the Supreme Court judge assigned to Asia’s appeal hearing on Thursday will have the courage to overturn her death sentence – and withstand pressure from extremists; and that Asia’s case will help lead to the repeal of the blasphemy laws.
- Pray for peace in Pakistan: tensions run high over the issue of blasphemy. Pray that the Government will have the courage to take a stand against extremism and uphold religious liberties for all, including minorities such as Christians. Release Int.
