Friends, 1,414 days That’s how long Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani has been in prison in Iran since his arrest in 2018. Why? Pastor Nadarkhani was arrested alongside three other Christians four years ago, when police violently raided his home, and was later convicted of ‘promoting’ Zionist Christianity. He is currently serving a six-year sentence, each day prolonging the pain of his wife and children. Pastor Nadarkhani has been arrested numerous times since 2009 – generally on unfounded charges, or no charge at all, but always because of his faith. In 2010 he was even sentenced to death by hanging for alleged apostasy, but this was overturned in 2012, thanks to international pressure, including our own campaign, which some of you may remember. A ray of hope shines for Pastor Nadarkhani, thanks to a UN finding. The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has asked the Iranian Government for his urgent release, describing him as ‘a target of religious discrimination’. This is an encouraging development, but now we need to build momentum. CSW has regularly raised his case with UN experts, and we continue to campaign for his release and for his conviction to be overturned. |
