Lepra.

Dear  All,

I hope you are well. In the heart of the tea-growing regions of Assam, India, where healthcare access is often a challenge, we are providing two specialist healthcare centres for people affected by leprosy and lymphatic filariasis.

With thanks to funding from Haddenham Healthcare and Tea People, the Comprehensive Disability Referral Centre in Tinsukia Tea Garden opened in September 2025 followed by the Satellite Centre at Dhoedaam Tea Estate in January 2026.

The impact of these new hubs is already being felt across the community. As of February 2026, 35 adults and children have been diagnosed with leprosy and started their recovery.

The presence of child cases is a sign of ongoing community transmission and indicates a need for increased efforts to detect cases early.

Thanks to a field activity by the centre, eight-year-old Babu received an early leprosy diagnosis and has not developed any disabilities. Read Babu's real-life story.
