There is one basic problem which is at the root of all our country’s difficulties. John Major was aware of it, but lacked the political authority to tackle it. Tony Blair recognised it, but lacked the political courage to address it. It is simple to summarise.
How can we ensure that a pound spent by the state on the taxpayers’ behalf delivers something like the same value as the taxpayers would expect when they part with their own cash?
