Two senior Labour figures have finally admitted that the party got it badly wrong in government when it relaxed restrictions on gambling.
Former home secretary David Blunkett said he had never been a supporter of plans to encourage bookies to install high-stakes gambling machines, which run the risk of leading thousands into a life of ‘misery’.
Labour’s deputy leader, Harriet Harman, who as culture spokesman is in charge of the party’s gambling policy, said it had ‘made a mistake’ with its relaxed laws, which had ‘ruined’ people’s lives.
That the misguided but basically decent Sheffield MP and former minister David Blunkett should admit to his party being wrong is one thing - that Harridan Harperson should do so is little short of miraculous!
