When governments and politicians are demonstrably out of touch with the electorate - that is a time when referenda must be permitted to solve the issue. Unanimity across political parties makes the need even more pressing.
In this manner, how few of our social and moral problems would still exist when the voice of the great British public is seen to extinguish the follies of ivory tower, we-know-best politicos?
