As a teacher of Spanish and French, by trade, I must declare that the modern language skills of this nation are simply execrable. Easily solved, though. Insist that all who go to to university MUST possess at least a GCSE in a modern language in order to matriculate. Abolished as a practice 45 years ago - this has done our nation inestimable damage.
