Erudite articles, almost exclusively from the left, consistently demand ever higher payments in welfare benefits.
There are few who tell the whole truth and point out that welfare dependency leads to decaying social attitudes which ensure ongoing, ever-growing poverty as a consequence of this.
The cycle of welfare dependency must be broken. If it is not, then poverty will become an even greater certainty in every generation - especially in our Brave New World where computers are causing dramatic falls in the availability of future jobs.
Sadly, writers who do explain this are in the minority as the academic left storms forth with its unending piles of half truths in highly slanted university reports.

The key word is 'dependency'. As many charities have discovered to the cost of millions, simply giving aid to people in poverty removes all desire to work. Once that is gone - the departure of hope cannot be too far behind.
Imagine the social chaos if everyone defined as being 'in poverty' in the UK were to receive equal or more in financial benefits than those who are in work. We do not need to try too hard as the overlap is currently substantial. THERE ARE ALREADY FAR TOO MANY CASES OF LOW PAID WORKERS HAVING A POORER LIFESTYLE THAN THEIR CANNY NEIGHBOURS ON SOCIAL BENEFITS.
The irony is that the greatest bitterness in such areas is found amongst the Labour voters who so often find themselves at the sharp end of such situations. Yet, they still vote for the left which will keep everyone poorer.
The poor must be helped. The sick must be helped. Those with long term disabilities must be helped. That is what any fair society must accomplish.
What it must not tolerate is the able-bodied being permitted to draw benefits, indefinitely. Socially beneficial workfare programmes must be introduced. Those on benefits must learn: to get up early; to be able to follow instructions; the art of punctuality; a pride in high standards; how to improve themselves etc, etc.
Work creation programmes must be the way forward. The broader social benefits would be enormous - but they cannot be permitted to be voluntary.
