 Jimmy Lai (Lai Chee-ying), the 78-year-old billionaire founder of Next Digital and the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper in Hong Kong, is currently imprisoned and was sentenced to 20 years in jail on February 9, 2026, for charges under the Beijing-imposed National Security Law. A prominent Catholic and fierce critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Lai has been detained since 2020 and is currently serving his sentence in maximum-security Stanley Prison.
