Death Penalty For Soldier Who Ran Amok?

'The American soldier accused of killing 17 Afghan civilians in their homes has been charged with premeditated murder and could face the death penalty.' (Telegraph.)
I would tentatively predict that the political pressures are such that if this turns out to be the case, the appeals procedures will not last the customary 15 years or more found so often in the USA.
