The Cones Hotline.

They laughed at John Major when he introduced his Cones Hotline so that persecuted motorists were able to ring and complain when major roads were 'coned off' and yet there was no work being done.
The idea was sound - the execution so dismal that it had to be abandoned.
Such thoughts were banging around in my brain as I drove back from Leeds to Sheffield last Tuesday evening.
The UK's most important road reduced to single carriageway for mile after tedious mile; added diversions; signs the size of postage stamps.
In only one small spot was there evidence of work being done.
How utterly pathetic!
