In The Entire World There Are Only ...

 ,,, 247 kakapos remaining.

The kākāpō is critically endangered; the total known population of living individuals is 247 as of 2023. Known individuals are named, tagged and confined to four small New Zealand islands, all of which are clear of predators; however, in 2023, a reintroduction to mainland New Zealand (Maungatautari) was accomplished.

Interesting that four islands have been cleared of predators to aid the survival of this fascinating creature. Well done!

Less exciting is that, in the UK, so many of our own environmentalists are happy to see populations of : corvidae - especially magpies -  grey squirrels and often even rats go unculled against the backcloth of huge damage to native songbirds.
