Christians celebrate first mass in 2 years while the Battle for Mosul enters its 3rd week
Christians living in the town of Qaraqosh, northern Iraq, made their way to their local church despite the chaos continuing around them as the Battle for Mosul enters its third week (top). The bell tower at the Grand Immaculate Church was damaged, statues were decapitated and missals strewn across the nave floor. It comes as Iraqi forces said on Sunday that they had recaptured a series of villages surrounding jihadist-held Mosul as the operation to retake the city from Daesh neared its third week. Meanwhile, huge plumes of thick black smoke could be seen from inside damaged buildings with smashed windows after ISIS tried to prevent Iraqi forces from retaking cities and towns (bottom left). And an Iraqi Christian soldier was seen guarding the church of Saint Barbara after it was recaptured from Islamic State in Qaraqosh, near Mosul (bottom right). Mail.

No To Third Runway!

SIR – One problem I envisage with building a new runway at either Heathrow or Gatwick is that it will make our country even more lopsided.
Massive expansion of an airport anywhere north of Derby would be rather restricted by the Pennines, but expansion of several airports on a smaller scale might be better.
Some say we need Heathrow expansion in order to remain big hitters, especially after Brexit. Yet Germany seems to do well with multiple large airports all over the country.

England Test Team Humiliated In Dhaka.

In the final innings of this enthralling test match, England were well on course for victory, chasing down a difficult target of 273 to win the match. At 100 without loss, who would have backed against a comfortable England win?
Cook and Duckett both delivered fifties but as their wickets fell, once again the England middle order collapsed utterly and let us down badly. On this occasion, the lower order batsmen were unable to undo the damage wreaked upon them by their hapless colleagues higher up the order.
Indeed, the quartet of Yorkshire batsmen could only muster a paltry nine runs between them! This will surely mean the end of Ballance's current test place - possibly for all time - as he has now had four consecutive failures.
Remove Ben Stoakes from this eleven and it looks a shambles.
Losing TEN WICKETS today, in a single session, to a third rate cricketing nation with ambitions of becoming second rate, is beyond disgraceful but the roots of the defeat go back to the borderline inept performances of the England spinners - it was not just the batsmen who let us down.
One must ask why Finn, a wayward fast bowler who rarely delivers reverse swing, was included in this selection - the decision was inexplicable. The imbalance of a team which fielded six left-handed batsmen is also inexplicable. As Asian pitches wear, the left-handers have a much tougher time against quality spin because of bowlers' footmarks on the pitch. So, why so many? Left-right batting combinations always make it more difficult for bowlers to establish a consistent line. There was no excuse whatsoever for including the out-of-form Gary Ballance in this eleven.
We must give credit to Bangladesh, however. They prepared two result pitches to play to the strength of their spinners, and the hugely impressive 18 year old, Mehedi Hassan, also Man of The Series,  delivered an incredible 19 wicket haul over the two tests. Well done, young man! A great career awaits you.
Their first ever test victory over England - my warmest congratulations to the Bangladeshis for making history.
The problem for England now is that on the full tour of India, which is almost upon us, the England side will once again have to face a barrage of quality spin. The Indian selectors will be very aware of England's deficiencies. This test match does not bode well for that tour.
(Incidentally, the fact that 13/28 decisions by umpire Dharmasena were overturned on review - should surely foment some sort of investigation. He is scheduled to stand in the first two Indian Tests. Surely, this cannot be!)

Americans - Understand What A Horror-Monger You Would Be Electing!

In a recent Marist poll reported by the Wall Street Journal, eighty percent of Americans and some sixty-percent of self-described pro-choicers oppose this extreme view. Instead, they support restricting abortion to the first trimester of pregnancy.
Just more evidence that the landscape is changing. Not only is Clinton’s extreme view on abortion unpopular—it’s outdated. A 2015 survey by the Public Religion Research Institute found that millennials are more likely than their parents to say that abortion ought to be legal only in certain stages and certain circumstances. According to another poll by Students for Life of America, just 17 percent of millennials agree with the Democratic presidential nominee that abortion should be legal right up until birth.
All of this led Ruth Graham to conclude in Slate that the pro-life movement is in the midst of a transition. But it’s not just in the sense that it’s getting younger. It’s also attracting the non-religious.
Not that long ago, being pro-life meant you were almost certainly a Catholic or evangelical. But now, the belief that killing unborn babies is wrong is transcending religious and even political boundaries.
daily_commentary_10_25_16Take Aimee Murphy, the 27-year-old founder of Pittsburgh’s Life Matters Journal. Aimee was raped by an ex-boyfriend who pressured her to get an abortion when she thought she was pregnant. That was when it clicked, Aimee says. “I could not use violence to get what I wanted in life. I realized that if I were to get an abortion, I would just be passing oppression on to a child.”
Her appeal, like that of a growing group of young pro-lifers who aren’t religious, is rooted in human rights, and the belief that our nation has committed an unspeakable atrocity in the name of convenience.
Kelsey Hazzard, founder of the group Secular Pro-Life, says the non-religious argument against abortion has the potential to bring people on board who would have never otherwise taken the message of life seriously.
And Destiny Herndon-De La Rosa, a Dallas resident who founded New Wave Feminists, sees protecting the unborn and ending abortion as a deeply feminist cause. She told Slate she doesn’t understand why so many fellow feminists treat fertility “like a disease,” as if abortion is the only way women can achieve their dreams. The culture of death tells women they must bear the consequences of pregnancy alone, and Herndon-De La Rosa calls that “a grave form of injustice.”
“We have to humanize the child,” she says “… this is a human being with their own bodily autonomy,” an argument that she says is “a completely feminist message,” but as we know has its roots in Christianity.
Of course, many of these secular pro-lifers hold views in other areas Christians would deeply disagree with. For example, Maria Oswalt, a senior at the University of Alabama who leads her school’s Students for Life club, say LGBT issues and sexual wholeness have little to do with protecting the unborn.
That’s wrong. If we teach anything here at the Colson Center, it’s that these issues are connected. One of the great lies of the sexual revolution is that the fulfillment of our desires is our greatest good. And abortion exists because babies—which come from sex—get in the way of those desires.
But at the same time, we should be thrilled and grateful to see the message of life taking hold beyond the church and conservative politics. Why? Because it’s true. The humanity of the unborn is increasingly undeniable, and the extreme abortion views Hillary Clinton represents are, in many ways, the past. The future belongs to the defenders of life, even if they don’t always share our faith or our politics.

Chuck Colson would often say that co-belligerency is helpful, not harmful, to causes Christians hold dear. And as John mentioned, truth is undeniable, certainly in sanctity of life issues, where an increasing number of non-Christians agree with the pro-life perspective. Breakpoint.

“It is very encouraging to see Roberto Azevedo, the director general of the World Trade Organisation, make clear that it will be straightforward for Britain to resume its independent seat on that body and that there will be no seizing-up of international trade.

“Britain is in a very strong Brexit negotiating position as the eurozone’s biggest global export market and also given our huge trade deficit with the EU as a whole.

Bishop of Aleppo: More Humanitarian Aid Is Needed.

SIR – Here in Aleppo we cling to normal life and find joy in the small things – such as finding vegetables or fruits in the local market – and the big moments: the birth of a baby, the marriage of two sweethearts.
We understand that war and peace in Syria are in the hands of the great powers. Nevertheless, we can all contribute to achieving peace here. First, we must sincerely desire peace, and to do that we must listen to the desires of the Syrian people.
World leaders must recognise that there is no military solution in Syria: only a political one, which must come from inside Syria, from its people, and must not be imposed from outside.
At a recent meeting at the Vatican in Rome, with the Catholic Agency For Overseas Development and 40 other Caritas agencies, I made it clear what the international community needs to be doing: supporting peace talks towards building a national unity government that comes from within Syria; upholding the dignity of Syrian people by providing humanitarian aid; and welcoming refugees with human decency and respect.

Food Prices To Increase Post Brexit? - Yes and No.

It is quite feasible that food prices will rise in the immediate aftermath of Brexit - but in the medium term, they must fall.
Almost all the fresh food we buy from the EU is held at prices which are artificially high, principally to the benefit of French peasant farmers. Prices are kept deliberately high, and essentially, not for serious profit-making.
The disastrous results of the CAP are there for all to see. In order to sell us food, in future, the EU will need to make itself at least as competitive as rival economies outside the EU.

This where we shall win - and win big! We have had to pay inflated prices for our food for far too long. That time is now drawing to a close.

German Children Abused By Teachers.

Fury as German primary school ‘forces’ children to chant ‘Allahu Akbar’ in Muslim prayer.

PUPILS at a primary school were forced to chant "Allahu Akhbar" and “there is no God but Allah", an appalled father has claimed.

The father of the pupil at the girl's primary school in German ski resort Garmisch-Partenkirchen discovered that his daughter had been forced to learn the Islamic prayer when he discovered a handout she had been given.
He claimed she had been "forced" by teachers to memorise the Islamic chants and forwarded the handout to Austrian news service unsertirol24.

Chabolas.

I was very familiar with the 'chabolas' issue when living in Madrid in the early 70s. At one point I was living within a very short walking distance from one of the northern, madrilenian, chabola townships and this problem continued for many years after I had left.
Indeed, The root cause of the situation was that Madrid and Barcelona were considerably more prosperous than the central small towns and villages.
Young people - with neither job promised nor adequate qualifications simply invaded these cities. Having little money for what, to them, was hideously expensive accommodation, and, in order to avoid vagrancy charges, they set up hovels made out of cardboard and corrugated iron all around the fringes of the city.
They went from a society where there were jobs - albeit poorly paid ones - into the worst of poverty imaginable living in conditions where disease was rife. The only money they gained came from the crimes they committed within the city itself.
Seemingly, few of these prodigals were prepared to swallow their pride and return to their towns and villages on the Meseta. Many were from gypsy families who begged incessantly on the streets.
The Madrid Ayuntamiento (equivalent in many ways to a council) took action but their extreme folly multiplied the problem many times over.
They placed these people into accommodation not dissimilar to council flats thus also qualifying the chabolistas for social benefits.
They then bulldozed all the chabolas. Problem solved.
Er ... well not exactly. A precedent having been established, wave after wave of new chabolas appeared on the outskirts of Madrid only for the Ayuntamiento to keep following the same policies.
This was a social catastrophe - not only for those inhabitants of Madrid already desperate to find work or housing but also for the literally thousands of villages which died because all of their young people had fled. Abandoned villages are commonplace.
When we consider the economic migrants of today, we must be very wary of falling into this sort of trap.
We must not be morally blackmailed into accepting people into the UK merely because they desire to live here.
The same applies to the countless bogus refugees (David Blunkett once stated that the figure in his day was 90%.) who try to scam their way into the UK.
They must be opposed. Checks must be rigid - and those refugees who are declared genuine can then be warmly welcomed.

As it was in Madrid, an astonishingly high percentage of those 'escaping persecution' are young men. Have they abandoned their women, children and ailing relatives to the horrors of war and persecution? - We may never know the whole truth.

Islam & The Left.

To any future, neutral alien visiting this planet without anything on his/her/its agenda other than assessing the reality of life on this planet - one great source of puzzlement would be the relationship between the political, liberal left and Islam.
These are two huge groups which apparently, have nothing whatsoever in common yet the former supports the latter at every possible opportunity - especially if this provides an attempt to take potshots at the Christian Faith.
I have outlined the details of this lack of congruence on numerous previous occasions on this Blog so I shall not burden you again with the seemingly endless lists of discrepancies previously noted.
The point of this brief article is more to exonerate Moslems from the wildest, political insanities committed in their name.
As Christmas approaches, once again we shall  be noisily assailed by multitudes of terminally simple leftists trying to 'gut Christmas' in order to 'avoid upsetting Moslems'.
In my rather broad experience of working with minority (?) religions, I have never found offence being taken in the way described by the gauchistes. Quite the contrary, if truth be told.
There is little wonder that so many people become angered and embittered when they see other religions - especially  Islam - apparently being the tail wagging the dog.
In practice, this is almost universally division caused by a political tendency rather than by the religionists themselves.

As usual, wherever they can be found, the left leaves nothing but damage and devastation in their wake.

Ukip Rescued From Oblivion?

The UKIP leadership contest is pivotal for the future of the Party.
Speaking as a UKIP MEP, I think it’s no exaggeration to suggest that the wrong decision now could spell the death-knell for the party.
If a candidate is elected who moves the party towards a bland, establishment-style politics, too far away from its core vote and demographics, we lose the basis of our electoral appeal.
If, on the other hand, the party lurches too far to the Right, then it’ll be a mirror image of the Labour Party’s mistake in choosing Jeremy Corbyn as leader.
The job description is pretty tough. We need a candidate who isn’t in one ‘faction’ or another, someone who can truly unite the party.
We need a candidate who is UKIP through and through, who has been a member through the good times and the bad, who has the capacity to be unfazed and not panic because they personally have experience of going through worse times and navigating us out through the other end.
Given the internal problems within UKIP, we need a candidate with vast experience of the inner workings of the party. We need a candidate who has experience of full-time elected office. We need a candidate who can appeal to working-class people – how else can we take advantage of the disconnect between Corbyn and traditional Labour voters?
I’m going to admit something that I never thought I would have to say. Three weeks ago, I had almost given up hope. I knew that if I stood for the party leadership I wouldn’t get enough support to win, and I couldn’t see another candidate with the slightest hope of uniting us.
I was preparing for the worst, as many were, fearing that the party would shatter into a thousand ugly pieces.
There was the altercation in Strasbourg between two of my colleagues. After 15 years of loyal service to the party, there was a part of me that felt like giving up and walking away.
Yet, in the days that followed, something remarkable happened. The mood in UKIP changed almost overnight; the party collectively woke up to the existential threat that we faced. There was suddenly a desire to unite, to find compromise, to work together once more.
But there was still no candidate for leader. I had despondent conversations with one of my trusted MEP friends. He, like me, lacked the profile to be able to win a leadership contest. We both knew what needed to be done; neither of us could do it.
Then came the game-changer: Paul Nuttall agreed to put party first, sacrificing much in his personal life to do so, and stand for party leader. The future of UKIP suddenly seemed much brighter with the only qualified candidate to follow Nigel ready and willing to take on the job.
I believe that the coming days we’ll see a serious coalescing of support amongst UKIP’s MEPs for Paul Nuttall as the next leader. He’s been a member of the party since, I think, 2004. His blood runs purple, and to him the survival of UKIP matters personally. When he took over as party chairman in 2008, the party was in an even worse state than it is in today – I remember being utterly horrified by what happened in September 2008. Under Paul’s chairmanship, the party was back on track by the European elections in 2009, where we had a huge breakthrough.
What does this mean for the North East? I note the words of Labour’s Brendan Chilton (General Secretary of Labour Leave – and one of the Labour people to truly understand the Brexit vote) this morning: “If Paul Nuttall wins the UKIP leadership, my party, Labour, will be fighting for its life in the heartlands.” This stark, rare, honest analysis is spot on in my view.
A Paul Nuttall-led UKIP will be a UKIP led by a Northerner, someone who understands the North and has spent plenty of time in the North East. He’s spent more time here than any other national UKIP figure, visiting Gateshead, Newcastle, Blyth, Sunderland, North Shields, Hartlepool, Redcar, Middlesbrough and others, many multiple times.
He’s shown a commitment to the North East, understands how to take the fight to Labour, and is vastly experienced politically.
If I were the Labour Party, I would be very worried indeed about Paul winning. As a UKIP MEP, I’m delighted to endorse him.

Please Pardon My Doubts!

Restoration workers who were plying their trade on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem stumbled upon the rock surface which Jesus was apparently rested upon.
The slab has not been seen since 1555 when it was enclosed in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre which contains the Tomb of Christ.
Christians claim following , Jesus was laid on the slab, or “burial bed” and enclosed in a tomb before being resurrected and ascending to Heaven several days later.
Centuries later, followers of Christ took the slab to what is now the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where it has remained hidden since 1555. Express.

Spot On, Tim!

Coun Tim Mickleburgh (Labour), Boulevard Avenue, Grimsby. Yorks Post.
IT worries me some of the intemperate language used post the EU referendum. And I don’t mean hate crime abuse directed at immigrants, but that directed at those of us who supported Brexit!
We’ve been called all names under the sun, from racists to little Englanders, while the London-based metropolitan
elite sometimes give the impression that we’re a bunch of uneducated Northerners
In fact we simply didn’t believe the “doom and gloom” propaganda of the Remainers, feeling that as one of the strongest economies in the world we didn’t have to be tied to other European nations but could make are own deals with the countries that are the powerhouses in the world.
At the same time we wanted power devolved as closely to the people as possible, restoring the sovereignty of our own Parliament and being allowed to impose measures to protect our own industries.
As for immigration, we happily accept genuine refugees escaping hardship and war, but don’t want a free border which has allowed for unlimited economic migration while unemployment has remained high. We can’t tell what the future will bring, but we mustn’t let Britain be talked down by the Europhiles.
