Subject Opt Outs In Year Nine.

If Michael Gove wants to improve the examination system, one of the first things on the agenda should be to examine which school subjects should and should not not be allowed Year 9 opt outs.
Languages, both ancient and modern, really are not for all. To those of lower ability, it is a cruel, often demeaning and always pointless exercise. (33 years teaching Spanish and French qualifies me to make such an assertion.)
The only reason that Divinity and RK are no longer taught in schools is because there is a catastrophic belief in leftist quarters that 'religion is outmoded and irrelevant'. I am certain that RE is basically useless and RS is heavily manipulated by 'the usual suspects'. Even so, if Christianity is correct - and few would go as far as to completely gainsay the possibility - it is a wretched condemnation of the system if it conspires to deny the possibility of salvation to pupils. (This is no excuse to introduce a package of fanciful religions in the name of evenhandedness.)
How can pupils be permitted to leave History behind them, as it were? History is vital to understanding, growth and development, both mental and personal. With no grasp of history, pupils have no sense of perspective whatsoever.
Geography is today a good subject but one which embraces too many politically correct ideas at the same time as failing to educate pupils in the most basic of facts. I refer of course to the huge numbers of our young who have no concept whatsoever about the LOCATION of towns, cities, rivers, mountains etc whether in the UK or worldwide. I remember the geography on my dad's geography paper in his police sergeant's exam in the early 60s. It was all about locations. I am not saying that the formation of rivers, contours, subsistence farming etc are not worthwhile - it is more a question of what is left out.
Bottom line. Too many vital areas of study are replaced by the Mickey Mouse subjects which this Blog merrily attacks at every opportunity!
