As the Wythenshawe by-election draws closer, Peter Hain, the former work and pensions secretary and one of Labour’s wiliest campaigners, has correctly warned his own party against complacency. “We are in a four-party fight,” he told The Independent last week. “Anyone who does not understand that is living on another planet. I don’t think anybody in the Westminster bubble should underestimate the depth of that disaffection against all of us, of whatever party.”
