SIR
– NHS hospitals are closing and A&E services are being restricted in order
to save money.
The
elephant in the room is the internal market and management structure of the
NHS.
NHS
England is not one entity but an umbrella for more than 400 statutory bodies.
Clinical Commissioning Groups buy services from hospital trusts. Each has its
own CEO and board of directors. Each employs managers to buy from and sell to
each other. Money is spent on managing money, not patients.
We
do not need all these organisations with expensive boards to run them. We need
one NHS England and local management of both primary and hospital care. The
savings would be phenomenal.
