If anyone watched that programme and came away feeling that an effective 40 year prison sentence was sufficient for the appalling Roy Whiting - then they must have some form of moral defect.
The ramifications of his crime were horrendous. He was directly responsible for the broken marriage of Sarah's parents; the death of Sarah's father by alcoholism at 45; he was responsible for the lifelong trauma to her sister and brothers; he wrecked this family from top to bottom, from the nave to the chops.
All of this without taking into account the abduction, sexual assaults and butchery of an eight year old child.
Imagine the sheer, naked terror induced into that poor mite whilst he indulged his sick fantasies before taking her life.
I am appalled that anyone at all exists in this nation who believes that this personification of purest evil has not forfeited his right to coexist with the rest of our population.
I am sickened that our lawmakers have seen fit to grant him entitlement to act in this wretched manner in the full and certain knowledge that he could do as he wished with no fear whatsoever of his own life being endangered.
Christians who misuse the Scriptures to fight capital punishment are the worst of these. The 'all human life is sacred' concept is exceedingly difficult to prove in The Bible whereas the right - indeed duty - of the state to execute is easily proven.
Those who cannot distinguish the difference between society and the individual in Holy Writ should be ashamed.
Incidentally, I am one of that tiny minority who has studied the Bible in its entirety.
And do you know what? I can still pray for Whiting to find God and be forgiven by Him. Society, however, works to a different set of guidelines. Society is meant to execute justice - sometimes tempered with mercy, it is true - but surely, that is entirely dependent on the circumstances of the case.
Please note, at no point have I mentioned vengeance - but I can mention retribution and the lex talionis.
I shall repeat again in this Blog - SHAME on all who are abolitionists yet feel that women have the right to butcher their own offspring! I have never encountered a worse double standard.
