The world has looked away. Will you?
Illustration by Emily Paik No one has heard from Cheol-Ok since she was sent back to North Korea. People like her need your help. Dear Friends, You haven’t forgotten, have you? So many global crises demand our prayers and attention. And with the spotlight elsewhere, the people of North Korea feel the world has forgotten them. But not you. Someone who believes in justice and freedom as much as you does not give up easily. At CSW, we’ve been working on North Korea for more than two decades, and with your help, we’ll keep going for as long as it takes. The Kim dictatorship demands absolute loyalty, which means religious practice can be viewed as an act of treason. People caught with Bibles face torture and prison camps. I heard of a man publicly executed after he helped three women go to church in China. And refugees sent back to North Korea are interrogated about links with Christians or missionaries – with unthinkable consequences if they have. It’s vital that we keep exposing the truth of religious freedom violations in this secretive, dangerous nation. Why? For the sake of people like Cheol-Ok… Cheol-Ok fled North Korea as a 14-year-old girl, but the moment she crossed the border, she was sold to a man 30 years her senior. Her big sister Kyu Li Kim, who’d escaped to safety, searched for 20 years before finally finding Cheol-Ok in China. The sisters made plans to reunite – but it never happened. Chinese police sent Cheol-Ok back to North Korea. No one has heard from her since. I’m deeply worried for Cheol-Ok. Refugees forcibly repatriated face the worst punishments... even death. Your help is needed urgently. Your gifts will make a difference. In countries like North Korea, donations help us to advocate for sanctions and greater accountability for Chinese authorities (who routinely forcibly return people to North Korea) and continue to document and report human rights violations. Gifts can also help North Korean refugees as we work with agencies to help them resettle in safe countries. By making a donation today, you’ll speak up for people like Cheol-Ok, who are prevented from speaking for themselves. Your compassion means people suffering for their beliefs North Korea – and around the world – won’t be forgotten. Thank you so much. Grace and peace. Scot Bower |
