Lucy Connolly freed from prison after hate-tweet jail term.
Blogger: As a retired JP and Chairman - I have to wonder why this offence was not tried in a Magistrates' Court. It was surely dealt with in a Crown Court in order to be able to artificially bump up her sentence. Had this been a Moslem woman, making identical comments, most assuredly, this would never have reached Crown Court. (And some deny the concept of 'two tier justice'.) Moreover, I am certain that there would have been no prison sentence imposed. Many who know my views may be surprised to learn that I considered this a crime which did indeed merit a custodial sentence. The only difference was that a sentence of two months custody (out in four weeks or less) was probably what should have been imposed. However, in the meantime, sentencing has been so appalling in recent months: paedophiles, perpetrators of knife crime, burglars - and so many more who have deserved truly heavy sentences - have been released from courts with token punishments and a giant, mocking grin on their lips. Starmer has probably lost a million votes on this abominable misuse of the judicial system alone.
